Life isn't easy for young people today:

Just for starters:

  •  Youth unemployment is reaching record levels, with young people disproportionately affected.

  •  There’s more pressure than ever to be successful at school, college and university.

  •  Many young people are overweight (30% in the UK) and unfit.

  •  Mental health problems like depression, eating disorders and self-harming affect many young people.

  •  New technology like social media opens up new ways to communicate, but can lead to cyber bullying.

  •  Four out of five young people end up hanging out on the streets because there’s nowhere else to go, and 70% of young people believe people their age get involved in anti-social behaviour because they’re bored (YouGov Princes Trust Youth Index, 2008).

Today, many young people are unhealthy

30% are overweight. Only 32% of boys and 24% of girls do the government-recommended hour a day of exercise.

This extends to mental health too. One in 10 children between one and 15 has a mental health disorder.

And our lifestyles don’t just affect our minds and bodies. They can also damage the environment. Driving too much, eating food that takes a lot of energy to produce and distribute, and lack of recycling are just some of the factors contributing to global warming.

We have programmes tackling all these issues, making young people healthier, happier and more environmentally-conscious.

 Improving young people’s emotional well-being

Every day, one in six of us experiences mental ill health, while one in 100 has a severe mental illness.

Young people are no exception. Low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety caused by things like relationship problems and bullying are all common. Rising youth unemployment only adds to the stress, often leading to self-loathing, panic attacks and depression. One in six young people find unemployment “as stressful as a family breakdown” according to a Prince’s Trust survey.

Support from community sports clubs can make all the difference. Our  volunteers are trained to support young people to talk through and solve their problems. And simply taking part in the activities training improves self esteem and builds confidence.

Boxing fitness makes young people more resilient to mental health problems, and can cut the risk of low level mental health problems developing into severe issues

More than ever before, young people need an edge to thrive in the UK's tough job market

Getting nationally-recognised awards in skills like leadership and teamwork can give them the opportunity they need to get ahead. We provide these vital opportunities.
Our leadership programme

Our successful leadership programme provides training for aspiring and experienced young leaders at a level right for them. We support and deliver a range of courses helping young people to gain qualifications, improve confidence and develop the competitive edge they need for other areas of their lives.

The Club makes a massive difference to young people

From giving teenagers skills that are immensely valuable to building their confidence and improving their job prospects, the club can change a young person’s life.

But we can’t do it alone.

We need your support to keep up our vital work, and make sure there’s a sustainable club for every young person in our community  who needs it.

You can help us in two ways:

Help us by donating

Any donation you can give means we’re able to continue to support our youth to thrive!

Help us by giving your time

We could not support the young people we do without the fantastic help of our volunteers.

Whatever your motivation to volunteer, whether it is to gain experience, develop skills, achieve accreditation, take advantage of the training opportunities or if you are looking for something that will enable you to give something back to your community, we want to get you involved.

This year we are really keen to involve volunteers in helping to raise our profile. If you have particular skills and/or interest in communications, such as social media or press work, and would like to get involved please email starboxingclub@live.co.uk
